When we think of English or Language Arts, there is more to that than simply reading and writing. We also have to consider spelling and vocabulary.
When my kids were in the elementary years we focused a lot (and I mean a lot) on building block skills (basic math facts, reading, writing), including spelling and vocabulary.
Homeschool Spelling Resources
Soaring with Spelling and Vocabulary – a daily spelling program that includes eight separate grade levels of spelling/vocabulary work. I love the independent work nature of this program. Other than having to do the pre and post test with your student, Soaring with Spelling is set up for your student to learn independently.
Phonetic Zoo – Excellence in Spelling – a phonics based program from the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) that uses auditory input to ensure students absorb and retain the correct spelling; students receive auditory input and spell the word aloud, letter by letter, to help them accurately remember the correct sequence—rather than simply looking at the word as a whole.
Evan-Moor Building Spelling Skills – Each workbook is a complete one year spelling curriculum divided into 30 week-long units
Spelling Power – For grades 3 through college this book provides all the spelling lists from beginner to advanced in one volume. All the master worksheets are provided using various line spacing so you can print off appropriate pages for young and old.
Spelling Workout – For my natural spellers, Spelling Workout is fun practice, building confidence and layering spelling skills. For my struggling speller, Spelling Workout is the thinking challenge needed for success, addressing spelling in many simple ways. When my children complete a lesson they are reading a passage, applying the words in sentences, creating their own stories, viewing the word in a dictionary and/or completing a crossword puzzle and more.
Christian Liberty Press – Building Spelling Skills – These books have very colorful covers which make them look inviting, however, the inside pages cannot be described as ‘fun’ or ‘colorful’, but I would describe them as ‘comprehensive’, ‘challenging’, ‘ thorough’. Not only do they give the student a solid foundation on which to build but they are also very affordable. There is a strong Christian content throughout all the books. Answer keys are available (although I never bought these and managed just fine) and no need for a teacher’s guide at all. These books have been designed for the student to be able to work independently – although obviously in the first few grades I worked along-side my girls.
My Spelling Test App – An app for studying and taking spelling tests. A fun and easy way to practice!
All About Spelling – The All About Spelling series brings together the three pathways to learning—auditory (hearing), visual (seeing), and kinesthetic (touching). This multi sensory approach, combined with a built-in review system and reinforcement activities, ensures that students retain what they learn and understand how to apply it in practical situations. I love that there is no set time limit on this curriculum or a specific grade level!
