Sequencing Simple Stories AND Story Writing Activities

When I taught preschool, I often worked with the concept of sequencing, “which comes first”. Later I found that it was also an important concept in the early elementary years, as children were learning to read. There are a lot of ways to practice sequencing in your homeschool, day to day. We played with this concept, by asking “Which comes first?” Then we found a helpful workbook called … [Read more...] about Sequencing Simple Stories AND Story Writing Activities

Seeking True Values by Pathway Publishers

Over the years, we have used a variety of programs for reading comprehension. By far, my favorite has been the Pathway Publisher’s reading series. We began with their book, Busy Times, for grade two. It helped so much with my daughter’s reading comprehension that we continued with the series. Then, a few years later, she asked to do the series again, and we ordered the book/workbook set, Seeking … [Read more...] about Seeking True Values by Pathway Publishers

ScienceWorks Series — Grades 1 – 3

During the early elementary grades in our homeschool, we focused on the three Rs: reading, writing, and arithmetic. We tended to save the other subjects for the summer days. We would do a little science or social studies before heading out to the park. The 3 Rs gave my daughter a solid grounding in basic skills, with something different to look forward to later in the year, like science! One … [Read more...] about ScienceWorks Series — Grades 1 – 3

Oak Meadow – Literature and Composition II

My family has used Oak Meadow curriculum through many of our homeschooling years. In 5th grade, we used Oak Meadow's US History program. We learned history through their fun filled hands-on, activity-based approach. Later we used much of their English curriculum. This year we used their English program for 10th graders, called Literature and Composition II. It provided both exposure to good … [Read more...] about Oak Meadow – Literature and Composition II

Spectrum’s Test Prep – Grade 3

In our homeschool, we tend to stress hands on learning and creativity with our academics. But I also wanted my daughter to become familiar with test-taking plus help her to know tests were nothing to fear. So through the years, I have had her practice with everything from spelling tests to math semester tests. She has gradually developed good test taking skills. But when we got ready to try her … [Read more...] about Spectrum’s Test Prep – Grade 3

Early Reading – Word Families – Reading Success Mini Books

One day, while doing phonics with my first grader, I realized that we needed a break from our regular curriculum – for both of us. My daughter understood the concepts in her phonics book but was just becoming tired of it. I wanted reading to be enjoyable and hands on! I searched our local teacher’s bookstore. I found a book that worked for us: Scholastic's Reading Success Mini Books – Word … [Read more...] about Early Reading – Word Families – Reading Success Mini Books

Spectrum Writing-8 Review

Have you ever wondered how to help your young teens progress with their writing skills?  And how to evaluate how they were doing?   We did, when my daughter was 13 years old or so. We looked through a number of great homeschool writing curricula and then chose one that writes to the student: SPECTRUM WRITING grade 8. We love their writing exercises and how well they describe the steps of the … [Read more...] about Spectrum Writing-8 Review

Explode the Code Review

Explode the Code is a phonics based program I consider invaluable in helping my daughter learn to read!  Explode the Code Review The series starts with three Primers, all introducing the child to the consonants sounds and written letters. Then the series moves on to the vowels and basic phonics patterns in Book 1 and Book 2. The best thing was that my daughter loved doing it! First thing in … [Read more...] about Explode the Code Review
