Spelling practice and test can often feel like a chore for both teacher (Parent) and student. On way to make practice easier, more fun, more streamlined is by using a Spelling Test App
{Since the original publication of this post in 2013 there have been many upgrades and changes to apps. Upon the update of this post in 2023 I was unable to find the original app featured. Instead I have included a few current Spelling Test App options ~ Heidi – TCC Managing Editor}
My children learn a spelling list each week, and on Fridays take a test over those words. Using the workbook curriculum, Spelling Workout, has been very successful for both of my children. When we get to test day, however, it just seemed that things could be a little more fun. Enter the use of a Spelling App. Apps make studying for and taking spelling tests FUN!
Spelling Apps for Kids
1. Word Wizard for Kids
This app contains:
- 185 built-in lists included
- customizable spelling tests – create your own spelling lists
- 3 spelling activities of increasing difficulty for working with each spelling list
- Speak N Spell, it will read out loud an test kids write
- And even Spelling Activities reports!
2. My Spelling Tests
My Spelling Tests lets you input lists of spellings and take tests on them using the look, say, cover, write, check method. You or your child get instant feedback and can keep track of every attempt at the test to track progress.
You can also back up and restore your spelling lists to iCloud to use across several devices. You can install spelling test sets as in-app purchases or just create your own!
3. Spelling Hangman
Spelling Hangman is a neat app for practicing spelling lists. Parents or teachers can add their own spelling list for children to work on, add audio, choose to lock their lists under “lock configuration” with a password and get kids practicing. In the app, the first word is spoken, and can be repeated by hitting the arrow at the bottom, and kids practice spelling it by using the keyboard at the right. The app plays like a traditional game of hangman, when a letter is missed a piece of the picture shows up, and if the entire word is missed, the word is shown.
Increasingly we are incorporating more and more technology into our homeschool because it just “speaks” to our children. Spelling Apps are a great way to have fun and learn a lot at the same time!

Looks like a great app! I might have to give this one a try. Can you shuffle the words or do they always appear in the order you put them originally?
Mary says
Rachel — I don’t think you can shuffle the words. I looked and I can’t do it, but more importantly, I asked my kids and they can’t do it, either! 😉

This is great! I have one child that struggles with spelling and he would love to be able to work on the ipad once in a while. Thanks so much, wonderful review! Lisa~
Mary says
You are welcome, Lisa. Your child who struggles might enjoy creating their own tests — I know mine do. Good luck!

I assume the app doesn’t correct the spelling as you perform the test correct? I am definitely going to try this out for my kids spelling. Thanks for the review.
Mary says
Josh — no, the app doesn’t correct the spelling as you go — but it does that at the END of the test.
