I really love the Rod & Staff English curriculum. It is wonderfully thorough, sequential, and it just makes sense to me. (I even reviewed it on The Curriculum Choice. ) I thought I would continue using it through the 8th grade. But last year my son (currently 11 years old) asked me why he had to keep doing the same things in English every year. Over... and over... And I didn't know. (I … [Read more...] about Our Mother Tongue

Real Learning: Education in the Heart of A Home by Elizabeth Foss
On my nightstand next to my Women’s Devotional Bible and the latest issue of my favorite quilt magazine sits a home school how to book I find so full of encouragement and practical advice I refer to it often. Elizabeth Foss’ Real Learning: Education in the Heart of A Home shows us how to use living books and real life experiences to teach our children. If you want your children to love learning … [Read more...] about Real Learning: Education in the Heart of A Home by Elizabeth Foss
Honey for A Child’s Heart
If I were stranded on a desert island with my family, destined to homeschool my children there until the next boat arrived, and I could only have one educational resource there with me, I would have to choose my library card. Of course, there would need to be a local library on that island, but that's beside the point. All joking aside, reading with my children is the one thing I have … [Read more...] about Honey for A Child’s Heart
Great Scientists in Action: Early Life, Discoveries, and Experiments
In my years of homeschooling, one of the most asked questions is, "Which science curriculum should I use?" I know I have asked that same question many times. Then one day I asked that question to a physicist friend of mine. I was very curious what a homeschooling physicist thought was important to teach his children about science and what curriculum he used. His answer was surprisingly … [Read more...] about Great Scientists in Action: Early Life, Discoveries, and Experiments
Christmas Lessons
It's that "most wonderful time of the year" again! Many homeschool families take the entire month of December off while others continue on with their regular school routine. In years past we have taken a break from our regular studies - even the 3R's - to focus on some type of Christmas unit. This year, however, because of some unexpected changes in our schedule, we will be sticking with our … [Read more...] about Christmas Lessons
Electric KitBook
We completed a unit study on electricity earlier in the year. As I was preparing for the unit, I kept wondering how in the world I was going to design hands-on electrical learning without having to buy lots of little pieces - and quite honestly, not really knowing what I was doing. Enter the Electric Circuit KitBook. This was an awesome tool! Not only did it provide the hands-on experiences … [Read more...] about Electric KitBook
Draw Write Now
We enjoy incorporating art into our unit studies. There are many ways to accomplish this, but one of my favorites is to have my children do a lesson from Draw Write Now, a series of books containing beginning drawing lessons and handwriting practice for primary and elementary students. The author, Marie Hablitzel, developed this collection of lessons for her second-grade students after seeing that … [Read more...] about Draw Write Now
Moody Science Classics
One of the goals my husband and I set when we first had children was to surround them with learning opportunities. We want them to love learning. And we don't want learning to be something that just happens during "school". Several years ago we saw an incredible special on the entire collection of Moody Science DVDs, and we knew immediately that we'd found something that we would like to own. We … [Read more...] about Moody Science Classics
A Guide to American Christian Education
It's the all-in-one book for all things BPA. If you only bought one book, I would recommend A Guide to American Christian Education by Mr. James Rose. It details everything you need to know, from the foundations to how to 4-R to lesson planning. He also included a section for home educators with quotes from families in the trenches and answers questions specific to our situation. He goes … [Read more...] about A Guide to American Christian Education
The Mighty Works of God: Liberty and Justice for All
Mrs. Ruth Smith is well known in Biblical Principle Approach circles as a mentor and Master Teacher of the Rudiments of America's Christian History (among many other topics). She saw a need for a Providential history text and thankfully she wrote it. There are to be 7 volumes in all, an this is the third. (The fourth is slated for release later this year or early next.) This volume is written … [Read more...] about The Mighty Works of God: Liberty and Justice for All
Miller Stories
From the time my children were preschoolers, and even now, we have enjoyed the Miller Stories by Mildred A. Martin over and over again! We started our journey with the Miller books by reading Storytime with the Millers. After gobbling up each and every story several times, we realized that the entire set would eventually sit on our bookshelf. And so it does. Each book, besides … [Read more...] about Miller Stories
Living Memory: A Classical Memory Work Companion by Andrew Campbell
Many people today think that memorization is unimportant. They argue that anything that they need to know, they can look up on-line. But can a person be truly educated if he doesn't "know" anything? I think not. We need knowledge in order to understand new concepts. Critical thinking programs are wasted if there is no foundation of knowledge to build upon. The writer has nothing to write about … [Read more...] about Living Memory: A Classical Memory Work Companion by Andrew Campbell
