One of the things we choose to use in our homeschool to improve handwriting, spelling, learn use of punctuation & other grammar skills is copywork.
Over the years we’ve pulled copywork from the books we’ve been reading, various curriculum, and quotes that really strike a cord with us. There are those days, though, when I totally forget what I’m doing and don’t remember to provide copywork.
For my 11-year-old, who has beautiful handwriting despite his struggling with Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome {SSS} we’re to a point now where copywork isn’t mandatory each day for him.
My nine-year-old is another story. He was what would be dubbed a late bloomer when it comes to handwriting. He was, and still is, our wiggle worm. He’d much rather be outside looking at worms then inside bothering with conforming pencil lines into shapes that make legible writing. For him, copywork is still pretty essential.
So, when Ami over at Walking By The Way, offered up a copy of her Copywork Lessons For Future Heroes I was pretty excited to give it a go. This nifty little copywork download comes with 150 days of copywork.
How We Use It:
Future Heroes doesn’t come with handwriting paper, for for my eldest I can simply provide him with notebooking paper and require him to write the passage of the day. For our nine-year-old he’s not read to let go of handwriting paper for learners.
This means that on my computer I have saved his preferred sized writing paper. I simply type the passage for the day into it. We print it out and it’s awaiting him when he’s ready to attend to the task.
What I love About It:
- I love that I can just copy out the passage for the day. No last minute scrambling wondering what passage it was that I wanted to use. No hunting down the book with the passage I flagged.
- I love that there is scripture mixed in with uplifting quotes from a variety of sources. {I’m not sure of the version used for scripture as I didn’t see it indicated, but of course if it’s not the version your family prefers you can easily swap it!}
- I love that the passages range from one sentence to several paragraphs. The larger passages are scheduled for more days, but of course you can use the passages for any length of time it takes your students to accomplish the task.
- I love that there isn’t handwriting paper provided. Many people use Handwriting Without Tears, which is not a programme my children are familiar with. So when we encounter this type of handwriting paper it can be frustrating for my children. I also have one student who needs handwriting paper and one who doesn’t, so the lack of it allows me to choose each child’s needs.
- I love that because this is an ebook I can print it out as many times as I need to for the students living within my own home.
What I don’t love About it:
Ok, so I know I said I loved that it didn’t come with handwriting paper, but it’s kind of a catch-22. While I love that it doesn’t come with it for the reasons listed about I also wish that it did come with handwriting paper. You know, for those days when I forgot to type it onto my nine-year-old’s handwriting paper.
Bottom Line:
If you need help getting your copywork quotes together for your boy to copy this could be the product you are looking for! Copy them out, drop them in a jar and let your child pull one out to work on. Print it out as per the instructions in the ebook and you’re all set. No fuss No muss!
And just in case you’re wondering where the proceeds go, the Brainerd family is currently in the process of adopting three precious children from Columbia. Which just makes one more thing I love about this product, the proceeds are going to an amazingly cause!

I love Copywork for Future Heroes! It was the most perfect addition this year. I printed out the entire thing and stuck it in a notebook with some handwriting paper. It’s made copywork SO much easier! And we both love the selections!
