Mr. D Math Consumer Math for Homeschoolers

One of the perks of homeschooling is having the freedom to teach what you want and how you want to. It has given us the opportunity to be sure our children can write in cursive (something they don’t teach in public school anymore), it has allowed us to slow down and take more time when they are struggling and to skip along when they know the material. It has allowed us to focus on practical skills like home economics, shop class, and consumer math for homeschoolers.

Mr. D, Math Consumer Math for Homeschoolers is a full credit high school course teaching practical things like banking, home buying, taxes and more!

{Disclosure: I received access to Mr. D Math Consumer Math for free and was compensated for my time in writing this review. All my opinions are my own, honest thoughts and I was not required to post a positive review. Your experience may vary. Please see my full Disclosure Policy for more details.}

Features of Note in Consumer Math for Homeschoolers

1. Self-Paced

While there is a certain advantage to live classes, I more often am drawn to self-paced ones because they fit seamlessly into our busy schedule. This is especially true with my teenagers who work independently from myself and each other. Being self-paced gives our teens the opportunity to manage their own time, which is one of the big skills (time management) we work towards as they grow into high school and beyond.

2. Combines Learning Resources and Techniques

This Mr. D Math course offers a combination of Note Outline sheets, worksheets, videos, interactive quizzes, and hands-on projects. It’s great for kids of many learning styles, offering a wide variety of engaging content in various forms.

Mr. D Math Course Test and Course Notes

In the photo above my daughter is working through a test in the course on the iPad and has her course notes up on her phone for reference (They are allowed to use their notes for tests).

Another thing Consumer Math for homeschoolers does is combine real life tasks with the math concepts each requires, offering specific lessons and activities for each real life task, and also specific lessons for the math concepts needed. This way students get plenty of practice at the math required for these tasks.

Some of the math covered includes:

  • slope
  • compound interest
  • percents
  • sales tax
  • work with fractions
  • calculating body mass index
  • and more!

3. Uses Real Life to Teach

One of the key components of Consumer Math for homeschoolers is projects. It’s one of the best things about this course! Students who take this course not only get the “book work”, but they are assigned real life tasks that correspond to each topic.

Mr. D Math Project Based Learning

Some of the Real Life Tasks (projects):

  • researching banks
  • writing checks
  • working with recipes
  • writing their own resume
  • and more!

4. The Signature Ease of Use that All Mr. D Math Courses Possess

Mr. D Math Easy to use format

Every Mr. D Math course we have used follows the same organizational format, making it easy to move from one class to another without having to relearn the lesson format.

The online platform has an easy to navigate side bar containing all the course material. It’s a virtual outline of the course in which you can easily click through to each section. And the course tracks progress so you can see how far along your student is, what they have completed, how far they have left to go.
