Teaching my first three children how to read was quite easy. I’m not even quite sure I remember teaching my oldest daughter to read, I think she taught herself!
It’s been a different story with my younger three children. My two younger daughters have some special needs, so I needed to do things a bit differently. Several months ago I turned to Hooked on Phonics as our reading program of choice.
I knew that I wanted a visual component to our reading curriculum, but I was a bit concerned the DVDs would be too much twaddle and not enough substance. However, I was wrong. The DVD lessons are appealing for the kids and do a great job of introducing a new topic. The lesson that follows is short, but gives adequate practice on the new idea or letter combination.
The website gives a tremendous amount of information and a good glimpse over what the DVDs have to offer. There is also a free App {with options to purchase different levels} that is a good showcase of the DVD lessons and what they are like.
Why I like Hooked on Phonics:
- Very straightforward lessons
- Pick up and go curriculum – no prep work for mom!
- The videos are engaging, keep the attention of my kids, aren’t twaddle
- Short, effective lessons
- It works!
I have been very happy with Hooked on Phonics. This semester in particular we have had lots of stops and starts to the flow of our homeschool year, and this program has been able to keep up with our stops and starts. My kids haven’t missed a beat.

Very interesting source, I think I would like to try this one. What age bracket does this book best recommended for? I’m using Hooked On Phonics program for my kids but this is something that I could possibly add.
