MAS Spanish – A Video Based Spanish Homeschool Curriculum
Mas Spanish is a unit-based homeschool curriculum designed for students between grades 7 – 12. Because it is designed for middle to high school age learners, it is designed with little parental involvement needed.
Each course can be paced as either a 9 month (full-year) or 4 month (semester) program.
Each of the 12 Units Contains:
- instructional presentation videos
- course work as reinforcement
- review videos of the course work
- online games
- activities
- and outside links
Key Things to Note About MAS Spanish
Mas Spanish is the most simple and straight forward Spanish program I have seen. The online course structure is VERY easy to follow. Everything is strategically placed in chronological order so it flows smoothly from one activity to the next.
You can get Units 1 & 6 for free so you can see the ease of flow for yourself!
1. Requires Very Little Parent Involvement
Since it is geared towards middle and high school students, there is little parent involement needed.
That means YOU don’t need to know the language and you don’t need to learn the language for your student to be able to be successful with this Spanish Program.
2. It is Self-Paced
With our busy schedules (multiple kids in multiple activities) having self-paced curriculum has always been a must in our homeschool. It affords us the flexibility to complete formal schoolwork around our schedule, not that of a set class time.
Since Mas Spanish is all online it’s easy to access (no need to carry around a plethora of books and notebooks). All the videos are prerecorded making it completely self-paced. You can choose to spread it out over a year, or finish it off in a semester based on how much time your student has to devote to it.
3. Video Based
Mas Spanish provides both instructional videos but also includes review videos of the worksheets. This is so wonderful because it’s not just you (or your child) with a written answer key checking answers. Instead, Katie walks you through each worksheet.
So my daughter watches the lesson video, printing out both the lecture notes (see more below), and the worksheet for that lesson. After completing the worksheet she moves on to the next part of the lesson which is a video review of the worksheet.
I love the added videos for the worksheet reviews. It provides the student more auditory time with the Spanish words. If it were just an answer key they would lost that opportunity to hear the words spoken again.
There are often links to YouTube videos provided to reinforce topics being learned.
4. Includes Fun Games for Practicing Each New Concept
The games were a pleasant surprise for me. There are links to games to reenforce the Spanish concepts in each lesson. Some have a Super Mario Brothers type flow, some are more puzzle type games, and some included fun critical thinking components.
I really liked that there wasn’t just one game for every concept. It makes it more fun and engaging because the type of game is varied throughout the course.
5. Easy Access to Help
At the bottom of every section of every unit is a COMMENT Box. When we have questions or concerns they have been answered promptly using this method of communication. I like that fact that there is no guess work as to what section of the course you are referring to, because each step has it’s own Comment Box.
6. Lecture Notes Are Provided
While you certainly can have your student use a blank notebook and take all notes from scratch, I really appreciate the lecture notes being provided. You can save them as a pdf and put them into a notes program where you can write directly in them, or print them out to create a paper notebook.
