My family and I had the awesome opportunity to review Home Art Studio- Second Grade DVD program. Home Art Studio is a year-long, DVD-based art curriculum. There are two DVDs, with 18 lessons on each disk. The program is set up to do one lesson each week.
Ms. Lindsay Volin is your personal art instructor, and walks you through each lesson. The second grade program is based on fairy tales and Ms. Volin begins each lesson by reading a fairy tale. The art project that follows is based on the fairy tale that was read.

The projects use very basic art supplies that you can purchase at any craft store (paper, paints, watercolors, markers, paintbrushes, markers, pencils, modeling clay, etc.).
The second grade program teaches many basic principles of art including:
- color wheel
- patterns
- overlapping
- textures
The lessons are presented rather quickly but having the ability to pause and rewind the DVD makes it very easy for the students to keep up.
Ms. Volin presents the concepts in a way that even a student with art struggles will be able to follow and enjoy. For example when drawing a dog, she demonstrates how to draw the dog using ovals and circles.
Even this “very art challenged” mother was able to draw a dog using Ms. Volin’s technique! I was impressed!!
My daughters LOVE this program. Even my youngest who typically wants nothing to do with art is now asking to do art first thing in the morning!
Home Art Studio DVD curriculum can be purchased for $24.99. To learn more about it, visit Official Home Art Studio. You can also visit and follow the Home Art Studio Facebook page.
Now for the giveaway – Home Art Studio Grade of Your Choice!
I have one Home Art Studio DVD to giveaway. The winner will get to choose the grade level of the Home Art Studio DVD (all pictured at the top of this review). Home Art Studio would make a wonderful Christmas gift – your child wouldn’t even realize it is curriculum!
Heather is a homeschooling mama of two sweet little girls. She is married to her best friend of nearly eight years. She strives daily to follow Jesus and blogs about all things homeschooling, faith and family at Upside Down Homeschooling.
So glad to hear about this…I’m not “artistic” at all but have a 2nd grader who is.
We use Home Art Studio for our art, and we love it! I would certainly love to win another DVD!!!
I love this curriculum! I currently use the 1st grade DVD we love it!
Amie- we love it too! We can’t wait to move on to 3rd grade!
This curriculum looks great!
Right now my daughter takes art class at her kindergarten co-op. Sometimes I just take books out of the library.
That is great, Christina! I wish we had a local co-op!
I would LOVE to win this. My daughter would color, paint, or draw all day long if she could. She would just absolutely love this,
Paige- good luck!! 🙂 My daughter would do art all day too. Many days, she does!
This sounds wonderful!
If I said I NEED this I wouldn’t be lying lol. It looks fantastic.
Sarah- it IS fantastic! 🙂 I needed it too!!
I currently teach art by doing it alongside our faith lessons.
That is a great idea, Sarah! Do you come up with your own art projects or do you find them online?
I normally surf the internet for ideas.
Thank you for hosting this giveaway.
God Bless,
Cheryl B
Good luck to you Cheryl! Blessings!!
We are currently using free tutorials and projects online. I have purchased the acrylics, watercolors, chalk and oil pastels, and all the necessary tools. Hopefully one of these DVDs can fit into the budget soon, and definitely make it onto the Grandma and Grandpa Christmas wish list. 🙂
Angie- These dvds would make a great Christmas gift!
These look great! I am not artistic at all and art curriculum hasn’t fit in our budget yet so my kids have never had art instruction.
This would be fantastic for my son for next school year!
Sorry my laptop hit enter before I was ready. This year we are using my Storybook Artists curriculum but next year I am trying to figure out what to do for my son who is not artistically inclined. Thanks!
Coloring pages and crafts
This sounds like a wonderful program that I would use for third grade.
My daughter is very artistic and does her own projects everyday. I would love to have something more organized to teach her the art concepts.
I don’t teach art – but would love to start!!
Looks like a great art curriculum. Thanks for hosting this giveaway.
I would love to use the 2nd grade level!
Mainly as a side effect of our geography lessons. Nothing too spectacular…..
Just what we need! A DVD curriculum to teach art! We aren’t using an art curriculum at all right now so I would love to add this to our schedule. Looks great!
I like that the lesson starts with a story. The lesson looks easy to follow.
I have tried to use books but sometimes really its hit and miss including real art instruction for my little. I loved art as a child too. This program looks like it might be on our short list next year.
We use an eclectic mix of free lessons we can locate and also whatever the children create on their own.
With books and colored pencils 🙂
I teach art with good intentions– but seem to rarely get around to doing it. This is something I’m working on.
Have heard such great things about this art program. Right now we are doing a series of chalk pastel tutorials from Hodgepodge’s blog, but I would love some more formal instruction.
I’ve been eyeing this for a while now. Would be great to win it! It looks like fun and seems to be well-rounded and easy to teach.
We use the art books we have and find other cool ideas on the internet.
I fear art… so I don’t teach it. ((runs and hides))
We go to a co-op class with our homeschool group but we’re looking for a way to teach art at home.
This is wonderful! Thanks for giving one away!
I would love to add this to our curriculum!
I am not good in art. And with other family issues, art doesn’t get done like I would like it to.
This looks great! I’ve been looking into art curriculum for my kids. I would love to try the 1st grade level.
I try to do art, but it’s mostly fun crafty things rather than real study of design. Thanks for the chance to win the DVDs. They look great!
We are using the 2nd grade DVD and my kids love it! I would so love to get the 3rd grade DVD. Thanks for offering this giveaway. 🙂
Looks like something my nieces and nephews would enjoy!
We do a lot of color sheets :-O
Also, I find some ideas online. We are learning about a different “famous” artist each month. I am always looking for help with art.
We are in kindergarten right now, so it’s pretty unstructured. Lots of free-painting and drawing/coloring. I try to not use too many coloring books because I want them to draw their own pictures. Sometimes I give them a theme and other times I just let them go with some supplies 🙂
I’d love to know the list of fairy tales used in the Home Art Studio 2nd grade level. We are going to be doing a fairy tale literature unit and want to see how well they match up. Thanks!
I’m art challenged as well. I’ve been looking at Home Art Studio to try for a while. My kids love art.
