Math is inevitably one of those subjects that people worry about teaching if they are going to homeschool their children. As parents we worry that we weren’t solid in math, or that it has been so long since we tackled upper level math. The good news is there are solid homeschool math programs (like CTCMath) that can do the teaching for you!
CTCMath Review
CTCMath is an online math curriculum for children in grades K-12 (through Calculus). Yes, you read that right! A one stop shop for ALL YOUR HOMESCHOOL MATH needs! It is a video based program but also offers printable versions of the lessons and worksheets so your student can work pencil and paper as well if they would like to.
Another thing to keep in mind is that CTCMath is NOT Common Core aligned. Can I get a high five? Here’s what they have to say on the subject, “We believe in the importance of teaching Math the traditional way. Students should have the freedom to choose their preferred method of working out. We do make sure we explain and teach methods which are, from our experience, the easiest, quickest and most successful ways for students to understand and master concepts.”
Benefits of CTCMath
1. Short Lessons
CTCMath keeps the lessons short and concise. I know with my kids if things get to wordy they start to zone out! If that happens they lose out on hearing the lessons and thus don’t learn the material. With CTCMath we haven’t seen any lessons that were over 5-6 minutes with many being more like 3. Breaking it down into smaller bites makes it so much easier to hold a student’s attention and helps keep them from getting overwhelmed and frustrated. 2. Student Paced
The CTCMath Homeschool Family Membership offers you access to all grades at all times. That means that if your student is progressing slowly and needs more time, or needs to go back and review, they can. It also means that if your student is working ahead they can progress on to other levels within the same school year.
The individual lessons are also easy to pause as well as rewind. This offers the student the option to pause and or go back when necessary.

3. Encourages Independence
With the short and to the point CTCMath video lessons mentioned above, students can easily complete lessons on their own. In addition to the video lessons there are summary sheets that students can view and print for their reference. And if they would prefer pencil and paper they can print out the worksheets and then input answers into the computer.
As an added bonus once students have finished the assigned worksheet and entered their answers, they are given access to the answers. BUT NOT BEFORE! This is key. While you want to trust that your students won’t cheat and look at the answers first, we all know this is easier said than done. So by keeping the answers locked until the student enters their answers, CTCMath allows for more independence without sacrificing the integrity of the results. {As you can see in the image above, the answer key is grayed out when there are no student answers entered.}
4. Detailed Progress Reports
Not only can you access detailed reports online anytime through the parent portal, but you can choose to receive weekly progress reports!
Another way to help keep you on track is through their downloadable checklists! Now this speaks to my type-A checklist using self! Through the parent portal you have access to downloadable checklists for all levels. A great way to use these is by printing them all at the beginning of the school year and keeping them with your homeschool planner. As your student progresses through CTCMath you can record both the date and grade for your records.
5. CTCMath is Affordable
As if there weren’t enough reasons all ready to love CTCMath:
