When I first found out I was going to review this product, I was excited. Since my boy’s love to play on their (non internet) computer with their educational games, I thought this would be great to try out. In the past we looked into different curriculum that offered computer learning and we currently use a (non-internet) computer program for my oldest son. Since we use one already I thought it would be great to see how others work.

Some thoughts I had before I registered and started the program:

  •  I have heard of other programs having lesson plans to set up before your child works on their lessons so that would be very helpful with this if I plan to have them work independently.
  • Is it cost effective? Cost is a huge factor in deciding any type of curriculum or program for my kids.
  • How much will my children learn while using this product?
  • Will it touch base on all Math and Language Arts for that grade level?
  • Will it be engaging as far as interest for my children?
  • Is it online or offline? Internet is tricky for me with my children. I don’t like them online at all..
  • Are they graded or assessed?
  • It mentions Science.. Is it Creation based or Evolution based?
  • How much prep work is it for Mom?
  • Do I need to assist or can they work independently?

First Impressions:
(I used this program on my youngest who is currently in 2nd grade)

PROS:

  • You are allowed to have your children work in their designated level and also choose one grade below and one grade ahead to maximize their learning potential.
  • The stories are catchy and they really enjoy playing the games and are eager to get to the next one.
  • In the younger levels there is a lot of praise when they receive a correct score and they are encouraging when they don’t.
  • Little to no prep time needed for Mom.. Which is a huge bonus for me since we use other forms of teaching and prep time is necessary for those.
  • In the younger levels it speaks to the kids so if they don’t know how to read they can still follow along.
  • My son has now asked to do Time4Learning each day

CONS:

  • I found out it was an ONLINE course so independent study was to a minimum since I don’t allow my children internet access, but might be ok for us as I get used to them using it and I keep an eye on them.
  • I found out that they don’t have a lesson plan right now to where we can set up what we would like them to work on to allow more independent study.
  • Science curriculum is Evolution based and not Christian based.
  • The price is worth looking at but not sure if it would work for us in the long term.

As the week’s went by and my son continued to use the program, he really enjoyed working through each lesson. He had access to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade curriculum but we mainly focused on the 1st and 2nd grade since some of the topics in the 1st grade Language Arts ended up being a wonderful review for him.

I am truly looking for a Language Arts curriculum for my youngest son that gives him more independence since he is still a beginning reader and a lot of his work requires my assistance.  I was happy with what I saw in the month we’ve tried this out.

I am not sure how the 3rd grade and up works or the pros and cons to those grade levels but so far in the younger grades, it seems to be very friendly, encouraging and my son really enjoys it.

Here is my review of our experience using Time4Learning for one month.

PROS:

  • Parent Forum available to discuss many topics from sharing recipes to homeschooling curriculum to using the online program
  • Additional printable worksheets to help your child better understand the lessons
  • Scope and Sequence on all grades and subjects
  • Each child has there own separate account
  • You can opt out on or remove any subject that doesn’t interest your family
  • Teacher’s Guides for Language Arts to engage your child in a deeper level outside each lesson
  • Subjects offered: Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies
  • You can change your child’s educational level one grade up or back to help with missing learning gaps at no additional charge and can change it with a click of a button
  • Refer a friend program helps you save money on the program fees
  • Two week money back guarantee
    THREE PAYMENT OPTIONS:
  • Monthly plan
  • Annual plan.
  • Paying quarterly reduces the monthly fee
  • Your child has his own log in and password
  • Parent’s have separate log in and password to enter forum and to change membership
  • Continuously updated curriculum
  • Student paced learning
  • Science and social studies programs are provided as a free bonus for most grades
  • Preschool through eighth grade curriculum

CONS:

  • This is a secular program
  • Designed for the public school system but working towards homeschooling families
  • Evolution Based
  • Program was developed as a web-based Internet curriculum
  • No way to limit access to lessons or establish a lesson plan you specify for your child to follow. They are free to do what they would like if not monitored or watched.

Having the program web based for our family was a bit difficult so I placed that as a con for us but probably wouldn’t be for most families. I just limit my children’s access to the Internet and with them on this program I have to monitor them at all times since our Internet access is tucked away in my office and limits my freedom while the boys work on their lessons.

Like I mentioned, not everything that is a con for our family will be a con for your family and vice versa for the pros’.

This is a great value for an online curriculum for the two main core subjects of  Math and Language Arts and with the free bonus of Science and Social Studies makes it a great value. Check them out!

I noticed lately there is a lot of programs and curriculum that have emphasis on fast learning, colorful and entertaining ways to teach and not to teach.

My son tends to lean towards fast action shows, and games to keep him interested while my husband and I are trying to move him away from needing this kind of stimulation in order to learn.

I was so happy to come across this DVD system called “The Basic Math Word Problem Tutor” by MathTudorDVD.com to help teach the basics in math.

When I put this into the DVD player for the first time, I was expecting that style of learning but I was happily surprised it wasn’t like that. I really enjoyed watching the gentleman explain what was needed to learn and master the skills he was teaching without all the splash.

It was simple to follow along and my oldest son really understood what he was talking about.

Basic Math Tutor is an 8 hour DVD with two disks.

Basic Math Word Problem Tutor
Subjects

Disc 1

  • Adding Whole Numbers
  • Subtracting Whole Numbers
  • Multiplying Whole Numbers
  • Dividing Whole Numbers
  • Adding Decimals
  • Subtracting Decimals
  • Multiplying Decimals
  • Dividing Decimals

Disc 2

  • Adding Fractions
  • Subtracting Fractions
  • Multiplying Fractions
  • Dividing Fractions
  • Percents Part 1-2
  • Ratio and Proportion

Word problems have been a struggle for sometime with my oldest son, trying to figure out if it’s an adding question or a subtracting question and so forth. This DVD really helps explain how to decipher what the problem is asking of you by using key words in the text.

He is easy to understand and gives many practice problems to help enforce each concept. Great for any child learning word problems or a great tool to use to reinforce these concepts.

We use copywork in our home since I have two boys that don’t like to write. I try to find many ways to enhance their writing experience and help with their penmanship.

I am picky though on what I will allow them to use. I don’t just want them to copy words on a paper. I want them to learn something as they learn to write and read better.

When I looked through this wonderful curriculum by Bogart Family Resources-called ‘We Three Kings of Orient Are – Traditional ZB Style Manuscript Level 1′, I knew this would be a wonderful addition to our homeschooling. Anything that glorifies the Lord, and helps my children learn more about Him, is a winner in my house.

Bogart Family Resources uses ‘We Three Kings’ by John H. Hopkins Jr. to help enhance our son’s handwriting skills while building a foundation in our Faith. This curriculum includes the full text of the classic hymn and scripture (KJV) which highlight the spiritual themes of the hymn.

One sentence is introduced per lesson, totalling 13 lessons. I love how they use the same approach to handwriting as does Peterson Handwriting, which we’ve had the opportunity to use in our homeschooling this year to teach cursive to both of my boys.

This curriculum is written for the beginning writer that is familiar with forming the alphabet letters. Line spacing of 5/8”, and a traditional-style Zaner Bloser manuscript font is used.

Copywork Lessons 1 and 2 are opening verses that focus on the
account of the wise men coming to visit Jesus, while Lesson 13 provides the closing scripture verse that shows the spiritual truth of the hymn. Lessons 3 – 12 include the entire text of the hymn and is set up for easy copying.

At the beginning of the lesson there is a copy of the Manuscript upper and lower case alphabet chart as well as a number chart for easy reference for the beginning writer.

What I loved about each lesson is the empty frames for my boys to draw and illustrate what they’ve learned in that days lesson. My children are very hands on and this will help them to enjoy their writing experience and encourage their creativity.

This wonderful product and handwriting resource is only $2.95 and available as an instant download.

yhst-26998623274860_2081_101680745We’ve been lapbooking since March 2008. When I found out about lapbooking I was thrilled since I have children that love to work with their hands while they learn. This was a perfect fit for us.

The month of December we’ve taken a step away from our regular schooling and have solely focused on spending time together and learning more about our Lord Jesus Christ and the reason for the season.

I’ve done lapbooks before through A Journey Through Learning  but I thought it would be fitting to share about this particular one since this is the Christmas Season.

This study helps you walk through the Bible during the time of Jesus’ birth. Full of Bible scriptures already placed and ready to print for you. No need to look them up.

As we worked through this lapbook, we learned about:

  •  the birth of Jesus
  •  Mary and Joseph
  •  Gabriel the Messenger
  •  Zechariah
  • Elizabeth
  • the Temple
  • Mary visiting Elizabeth
  • John the Baptist
  • Caesar Augustus
  • The Birth of Jesus
  • The Census and Taxing
  • The Manger and Shephards
  • The Magi
  • King Herod
  • The Gifts
  • and more….
Few of the Templates

Few of the Templates

The lapbook format was easy to follow and understand. The research is already done for you. No additional prep is necessary. Print out the information you will need to do that lesson and you’re ready to go.

The information is written in a way you can just read it straight to your child and then complete the lapbook templates together.

The information is written first, then follows the scripture on the next page that is typed out for you in regards to that specific lesson and then the template/s follow with step by step instructions on how to cut them out and put them together as well as what to put in each template.

The templates are in color which is nice. You can choose color or black and white. There is also step by step instructions at the beginning of the book for the beginning lapbooker on how to assemble this lapbook and what you will need to put it all together.

If you are looking for a lapbook or hands on curriculum to teach your child about the birth of Jesus, this is a wonderful resource.

teacher-parent-store_2075_306356511The one area that our family tended to not work heavily on was word problems for math. It always seemed to be put in the back of the line with adding, subtracting and multiplying up at top priority. That was until I came across Evan Moor “Daily Word Problems” for Math.

Reading of course needs to be in place in order to really tackle the concept of word problems but once that is firmly established, this curriculum really helps.

Broken up into 5 problems a week with one and two step problems. This curriculum has really helped my oldest son learn how to read and understand math through words. At first he didn’t understand how sentences could turn into a math problem and was very intimidated by this concept.

Now, with the help of Evan Moor he doesn’t feel overwhelmed like he did with other curriculum that gave problems after problems each day. This only tackles a problem a day allowing him to master it, feel confident and then move on.

This book series will help sharpen your child’s problem solving skills, one problem at a time every day for 36 weeks. Each week’s problems are on the same theme. For instance one week is on the presidents and this gives them one problem a day for five days with that same theme.

This book series is in grades 1-6. Includes a scope and sequence chart and an answer key.

You can learn more about Evan Moor by going to their website @ www.evan-moor.com.

A little over a year ago, I was in eastern Washington at a teacher store and I came across a few books called “Build-a-Skill Instant Books”. I thumbed through them and thought these would be great for both of my boys to use. What I loved about them at first glance was it reminded me a lot of lapbooking.

Grades 2-3 Language Arts Books

Grades 2-3 Language Arts Books

If you’ve done lapbooking before you might be familiar with the concept of cutting out templates or booklets and filling them in with information and pasting them into a folder, binder or scrapbook.

Grades K-1 Series of Books

Grades K-1 Series of Books

I decided to purchase all of them since I live in Montana and have never seen them locally. They come in two sets of grade levels. K-1 and 2-3. The ones we are working on are all pertaining to Language Arts and are very hands on in approach. They do have Math books to use but we have not used those.

Grades K-1 come in several different areas of study for Language Arts including:

  • Word Families-short vowels
  • Word Families-long vowels
  • Consonant Blends and Digraphs
  • Color, Shape and Number Words
  • Short and Long Vowels
  • R-Controlled Vowels-Vowel Digraphs
  • Sight Words, Part 1
  • Sight Words, Part 2
  • Beginning-Ending Consonant Sounds
  • Synonyms and Antonyms

Math includes:

  • Time and Money
  • Math Facts to 20

Grades 2-3 areas of study include:

Language Arts:

  • Synonyms-Antonyms
  • Homophones
  • Contractions
  • Irregular Vowels
  • Compound Words
  • Prefixes-Suffixes
  • Plurals
  • Parts of Speech

Math includes:

  • Multiplication and Division
  • Time-Money
  • Fractions
Short Vowel Word Family Booklets

Short Vowel Word Family Booklets

We’ve worked on several of these books in both grade levels and my boys have learned alot.  Each book has several styled books to cut and fill out. Some to color if you choose or copy them onto colored paper. We have taken the books they’ve done and placed them like lapbooking or added them to existing lapbooks they were working on that related to the Build-a-Skill books.

Learning Sight Words Booklets

Learning Sight Words Booklets

They include different booklets to cut out to learn different concepts. For an example on the sight words that you can see to the left here there is many ways to teach the sight words through these books that will help reinforce the spelling of each word. Such as writing them out with your “I Can Read” and “I Can Write” flip books and then taking those same words and seeing them in sentences while filling out different booklets and coloring pictures.
Even though these come in the grade levels specified I noticed some concepts were a bit advanced for the grade they recommended so we waited to introduce the concepts. They are easy to use and fun to put together.

Once you purchase the books you will need to photocopy the pages for your child to cut out and put together so there will be an additional cost for that.

The books are inexpensive to purchase at around $4.99 each and can be copied over again for more than one child.

If you are looking for a hands on way of teaching Language Arts and Math that is fun and engaging then these might be something to explore. We love all of the books this series has to offer and will continue to use them until all of these concepts are mastered with all of our children.

Sample Writing Assignment J is for Japan

Sample Writing Assignment J is for Japan

Filled with lapbooking, cutting, reading and writing exercises.  The studies are designed to work at your own pace so there is no specific planner for you to follow. We really enjoyed working through it this way.

Lapbooking is a huge part of our hands on approach to learning and when we found this curriculum, I was happy to try it out.

This particular study comes in Preschool and 1-3rd grade. I used both grade levels to see the difference in them. I noticed they were very similar and taught the same things but at different levels of learning.

Sample of Lesson Plans

The lesson plans were easy to follow and were designed to read outloud directly to the child which makes prep time  a minimum. A plus in our homeschool! With full colored pictures throughout the lesson plans to help draw in the student to the study and help them feel like they are really there.

The lapbooking templates were filled with art activities which was a huge hit here at our house. From drawing your own Kimono, filling your Bento Box, to making your own Kokeshi doll.. My son learned a lot at his level of learning about Japan.

As we continue our homeschooling I look for many ways to keep our schooling hands on and fun. I came across Integritas Academy which is owned by a homeschooling family. They offer affordable file folder games in many subjects. I absolutely love to use file folder games and the kids love playing them. When I saw how wonderfully these were made I wanted to try them out.

Homophone File Folder Game

Homophone File Folder Game

Most subjects I can find fun things to do with my two  boys. Language Arts has been a struggle for me in the past keeping it hands on and away from book work.

When I saw that there was some Language Arts games available on topics my boys were needing to learn such as homophones and contractions I was really excited about trying them out.

The boys loved how fun and easy it was to play them. With little supervision, I knew my kids were getting taught the skills they needed while enjoying the subjects.

File Folder games are a wonderful tool to help young children learn and have fun doing it. They are easy to assemble and very cost friendly at only $3.00 each. Once you purchase them, they are available as a download and you just print out what you need and put them together on your own file folder.

You can browse their website by grade or subject.

File Folder subjects that are available right now include:

  • Math
  • History
  • Language Arts
  • Geography
  • Christian Themed
  • Phonics
AM PM File Folder Game

AM PM File Folder Game

and also come in grades Pre-K – elementary grades.

My children have learned a lot using these file folder games such as AM and PM, the compass while going on a treasure hunt, learning contractions while putting them together in the contraction contraption and going around the board game putting the correct homophone in the sentence to win.

If you are interested in bringing games to your homeschooling I would recommend taking a look at these. They are inexpensive, simple to put together, they take up little space compared to board games, easy to play and the kids love them.

Contraption Contraction File Folder Game

Contraption Contraction File Folder Game

Some topics that they have available include multiplication, addition and subtraction, skip counting, time, states,  patterns, numbers, money, seasons, alphabet, contractions, and homophones.
You also can request a custom made file folder game and the cost is only $3.00.
You can purchase these individually or you can receive a CD of 17 games for only $15.00.

CDk-8casewebSince we are a hands on family, I was so happy to find Spears Art. This is a wonderful program that even the craft/art challenged teacher/student can enjoy. Complete curriculum for all grades K-8 come on a CD. You print out only what you want to use. What I love about this program is it’s set up with a lesson plan that is God centered and helps implement seasons such as Christmas, and Thanksgiving right into the lessons. So there is no need to set this aside for the holidays. You can use it right through.

One or more activities for each grade level based on that main theme, addressing art elements, art principles, art history, design elements, and the scripture is the center of each lesson.

The complete K-8 Art program is only $39.95 on CD and can be used year after year as each skill builds off another. There is no need to purchase it every year. The scripture is the same for each grade level but the art techniques that follow the scripture get more challenging with age. It is a wonderful program to use with multi age children at the same time. I have a 5th and 2nd grader and was able to sit them both down to discuss the Bible scripture for the day and split them up easily to do there own grade level projects.
Sample Project for Younger Grades

Sample Project for Younger Grades

It was very simple for me to put together and didn’t take much time at all. The materials needed are listed out and most are very inexpensive ones you probably already have in your home. For each activity the teacher prep is done for you.

There is also a sheet for you to use to evaluate your students performance if you give grades for your schooling. It is very easy for your to pick and choose only a few activities if your time is limited or start and stop anywhere you’d like. Since I didn’t get the curriculum at the start of the school year, I was not worried at all that we might “miss” anything.

There are many types of art medium used. Pencils, colored, charcoal, and the different types of drawing pencils.Plus, oil pastels. and paints. Some are crafty projects like the ones below here that my boys have made using this curriculum, but implement shading techniques and keeping within the lines.

Pumpkin w/Scripture
Pumpkin w/Scripture

For those who can’t afford an art class would love this affordable way to teach art at home. Do you have a child that loves to color or cut? Do you want to add art to your curriculum but don’t want to spend a lot of money? This might be for you!

This isn’t just an art curriculum, but also a Bible lesson with art to help implement the bible story presented. Broken down into monthly themes, then into weekly lessons of 2 lessons per week. An easy way to put art into your homeschool for just two days a week.

Booklet Activities to Color

What I love about this curriculum is the log book. It mentions it’s a classroom log but we used it after each lesson to write down what we remembered about that lesson after it was completed. For us there was no wrong or right answer. It was to demonstrate the knowledge they received during that time period. Something they can go back to later for review.

Learning About Roots

Learning About Roots

You can use these books as a stand alone to teach these concepts or they are easily used to supplement what you are already using. We use lap booking while using these books and it really helps build more understanding and allows more hands on activities to help my children grasp the concepts being taught. I would highly recommend these books for those that like to color, cut, paste, do experiments and overall love to work with their hands while learning.

To benefit the most out these books you will need to purchase extra items to do the experiments. Each concept tells you what you will need to buy and gives you a few different things per concept so you have things to choose from or you can do all of them. I felt they were all inexpensive to purchase or you may already have the items in your home. There is also a list of books to help enhance the study and should be available at your local library.
